What do you put on your banana bread?


We have already posted an article about the best savory banana bread toppings, but what about healthy sweet toppings?

So. Many. Toppings. There’s so much more you can do with banana bread than you would initially think. We sometimes even surprise ourselves with newly discovered topping ideas. Some toppings in this list are truly classics that also never should be forgotten. The one slightly healthier than the other, depending on what you focus on in your diet of course!


Even though we are big fans of a good savory topping, sweet toppings – especially in the morning – continue to be our favorite.  For a good slice of banana bread usually counts that you don’t need anything at all. Banana bread on it’s own is already tasty, nutritious and filling. Especially, if you choose for an alternative for flour such as almond meel, spelt flour or oat flour and if you don’t add any extra butter or sugar.. 

In case you feel like an extra special dish, on the weekend or just to kick your day off right, then sweet toppings will turn your banana bread in an extra happy meal. Guilt free, because the healthy toppings in this blog are also really healthy!

And… nice to know: these sweet toppings are done in a jiffy. Extra easy if you don’t have that much time in the morning. The perfect healthy breakfast if you ask us!

The different healthy, sweet toppings are by the way also great to make with kids! By doing so, you turn their after school lunch or weekend breakfast into something fun. Have them decorate their own slice of banana bread with the healthy toppings.  The “healthy” aspect doesn’t need to be mentioned here of course ;-).  A battle of the ‘prettiest banana bread toppings’ brings back memories from when you would decorate cookies or cupcakes on you childhood birthdays with all the sugary decorations known to mankind. In those good old days healthy sweet toppings were not really a thing yet.

Because we quickly realized we could list around 120 banana bread toppings, we decided to make a shortlist of our absolute favorite sweet banana bread toppings. What is your favorite? Let us know in the toppings. 

1. Peanut butter & jelly | FAVORITE

Our absolute favorite! Peanut butter & jelly. Peanutbutter and jelly is already very yummy on a regular slice of bread, but on a slice of banana bread it’s a whole new level of greatness. Spread a bit of peanut butter and jelly on a slice of banana bread and your done!  Tip; if you grill your banana bread first, this topping is even better!

2.  Yoghurt with nuts and seeds

Because we would feel slightly strange to eat frosting for breakfast, we looked for the ideal solution. And we found it! Throw on a descent amount of (coconut) yoghurt with some honey on your slice of banana bread and finish it off with nuts and seeds. There you have it: a power breakfast is served! 

3. Yoghurt, blueberries & dark chocolate

A similar idea to the previous sweet topping, but then for the real sweet tooth. Throw on that nice amount of (coconut) yoghurt and add some blueberries en pieces of dark chocolate. 

4. Salted caramel peanut butter with banana

We are absolutely addicted to anything caramel sea salt so the caramel sea salt peanut butter has a special place in our heart. It turns your slice of banana bread into something extra special. A little extra to treat yourself with. And we don’t have to tell you what a great combination peanut butter and banana are, so add some extra slices of peanut butter and you’re ready to enjoy!

5. Nut butter with figs and nuts

Cashew butter, almond butter, hazelnut butter or just all of them mixed! We love them all and they are great to vary with. Add some fresh or dried figs and extra nuts for that little crunch and you have a delicious breakfast or snack to look forward to.  You could also easily make your own nut butter by putting all your favorite nuts in a blender. Just ad a spoon of coconut oil in the end (if preferred) and done! 

6. Date syrup with slices of banana

This healthy and incredibly sweet topping doesn’t need much explanation. You get the point right 😛 You’re actually adding an extra amount of what’s already in our banana bread: dates and banana. Can’t go wrong there.

7. Biscuit spread with gingerbread cookies

Okay this one is probably very dutch. And mostly to be found in the holiday season, but absolutely worth the try. 

8. Banana bread toast with apple syrup and cheese

Okay in all fairness, this topping is not really sweet, but it’s somewhere in between. We love that! Just the right balance between salty and sweet. Actually toasting banana bread is already an insane life hack, but then with this combination, you’ll feel like your in heaven! Absolute must-try.

9. Cinnamon butter

By mixing try utterly simple ingredients, you create something incredibly tasty to put on your slice of banana bread. Butter, sugar and cinnamon. And there you have it! Your very own cinnamon butter. Extremely delicious and also very simple!

10. Clotted cream & jam

 Oops, we kind of stole this one from the well-known scones, but that doesn’t change a thing, cause this combination is also just heavenly good on a slice of banana bread.
